Can you guys believe its the end of November?! Everyone is starting to really get into Christmas prep. In a few short weeks it will be here (enter terrified face). Yes, Christmas is a joyous time of year, but its also a race against time. As great as it is, its just as stressful for many. Our lives are going at full speed all the time. In the mix of all of that, we are somehow supposed to keep our sanity. Well, that's easier said than done. I do think self care helps us tremendously. Our hair can truly help us feel on top of our game. The reality is, its time consuming to visit the salon. There are several ways to shorten your time spent in the chair, and still get the benefit. This post will hopefully offer you a solution to how you can save time at your hair appointments.
Dimensional color is the best type of color you can have. The bummer is, it takes a lot of time! Many people ask for this service, followed by the "how long is this going to take?". This is a result of getting it done before, and coming to the realization that it is no short task. A foil highlight and haircut can easily exceed 3 hours, if done precise and correct. Now, let me say, it is not impossible to find a stylist that can get you in and out in 1.5 hours on a full head highlight and a cut. They are out there. I will say up front, that isn't me. I try my best to be precise, and pay attention to the details....after all, people are wearing what I do on their head.
As a stylist, sometimes we do recommend highlighting every visit. There are cases in which this is a necessity. I have clients that LOVE super light blonde, or the fresh look of a highlight, and are only able to achieve this through highlighting. The end result is consistently coming to the salon, every 4-6 weeks, for an average of 3 hours, especially if your hair is thick. There is another alternative. In fact this is my very favorite process that I try to encourage people to try. There are lots of details in the process, but I will save some of these for another day.
My suggestion is what celebs and models go to as their hair cycle. It offers consistent change, and super healthy hair. Keeping yourself on a rotation, ensures you are keeping your locks looking great!
Every 4 weeks
*Personalized Root Color or base break (even FASTER than root color)
OR
*Customized Foils
AND
*Conditioning Gloss/Glaze applied all over (timing on this will vary between 5-25 minutes)
You can do dimensional color (highlights and a base color) on each visit, but I would stick to less than 10 foils. There's really no need to do more than this every 4 weeks. The conditioning glaze is far more important than more foils. This process should take about 1.5 hours (1/2 the time of all over dimensional color, with the same effect!)
So what about the cut? I'm going to say I would adjust it into your service based on your needs. I find a lot of people prefer to do their cut at a separate appointment , or they will do it every other time, approximately 8 weeks. The reason why they are able to do this is because the glaze helps seal the ends of your hair (along with the conditioner) significantly reducing split ends, and breakage. If you feel you need a cut every 4 weeks you have a couple options. You can do more customized foils or switch to a root color.
The only way you will truly save time is if your stylists invests time to help you a customized rotation. Each client is different, with different needs. I feel strongly that everyone cannot do the same rotation for their hair. We all are individuals with individual hair needs. Just keep in mind with color, you can't do the roots, neglect the ends, and think its going to look good. Glosses and glazes are necessary for healthy hair. If your hair seems dull, try a glaze/gloss 1 time, and you will forever get this service done.
A customized rotation of services offers you the best hair possible, hands down. For the average person you are looking at 1.5 hours and your done. When you do the dimensional color, you will need to allow more time. Now, I know, some people will be saying...what??? come to the salon every 4 weeks??? Listen, if you are coming to the salon 3-4 times a year, your bill is likely higher than the 4 week service AND you've rocked that color for 4 weeks still. The remaining 8 you have had roots that are certainly being noticed by other people. My philosophy is every client can find a color/cut rotation to fit their needs. Your stylist will know whats best for you.
